Chapter Twenty

“We have to hide!” screamed Nora, only just forcing her voice above the cacophonous wailing.

“The men on bikes?” Minako yelled back. “Is that who you mean?”

Nora didn’t immediately answer and I thought, at first, she hadn’t heard the question shouted at her from only a yard away.

Then Pompidou jumped to his feet. Alertness uncharacteristically in his eyes. He scampered to the door and then broke into a desperate run, then was gone without a glance back to us.

With one last imploring look in our direction, Nora followed him.

There was no time for Ludo, Minako and me to discuss; no chance to tackle the pros and cons with all the noise. Wordlessly we made the decision, and in the same instant moved as fast as our delicate legs would take us. We had no idea what was going on, but a sense of self-preservation had truly kicked in.

Whatever this noise signified, obviously it wasn’t good.

Outside the sun was high and blinding and seemed to burn off everything; an assault to the senses. Carved stone steps (which must have been capable of singing the soles of bare feet), led us to the beach below. Pompidou was already on the sand. Nora, not as agile as he was, wasn’t far behind; scurrying and in constant danger of tumbling forward.

The noise wasn’t quite as intense outside those walls. I glanced around and saw big foghorn speakers mounted at either end of the beach. Within the walls of the little building, the sound had echoed – swiftly ramping itself almost to the level of a nuclear explosion – but on the sand itself, it didn’t ring the eardrums so unbearably.

We raced behind Nora and Pompidou.

“What happens when they come?” Ludo called, breathlessly.

Nora continued to stride forward, aiming for a low point in the white, shiny rocks which surrounded the beach. If you squinted, you could determine a vague path through. “Hitherto, they’ve left food. Or they’ve left people, like you. Then they’ve ridden off before we’ve ventured forth to retrieve them.”

“Is that it?” snapped Minako.

“You haven’t seen these men!” Nora was on the rocks. Clearly not wanting to be in the open when they arrived. “Or you have seen them, on the plane. You might want to punch them in the faces, my dear, but there’ll be a number of them and they’ll be armed, so what precisely are you going to do? I think they ring these sirens to make sure we’re scarce.”

“To get us to hide?”

Nora took a deep breath. “Besides which, there’s something wrong here. In my week, or however long it is I’ve been on this place, they haven’t come twice in one day before. I don’t feel good about this at all!”

She marched and we followed. Already Pompidou was skipping ahead, loose limbed and nimble. Surprisingly agile for a tall man; the sinews of his wiry frame apparent through his thin shirt. This was obviously not the first time the two of them had done this, and Nora seemed to know to use him as a mountain goat to lead her way.
